Next of Kin API for Banks in Lagos, Nigeria: Banks, Fintechs, NGX Registrars and Pension Administrators
Lagos is home to many of Nigeria’s banks and fintechs, and to the Nigerian Exchange. Each of them holds contact details that go stale. Here is how a next of kin API helps banks, fintechs, NGX registrars and pension administrators, and where Entrustt fits.
Entrustt is a next-of-kin API for institutions in Lagos. It records the person a customer, shareholder or contributor has named, keeps that contact current, and uses it when the customer cannot be reached. Here is how that works for each type of institution.

The CBN’s dormant account guidelines, as commentary summarises them, expect banks to warn customers before an account becomes dormant, track inactive accounts and try to reach the account holder or the beneficiaries they named. In February 2025 the CBN also told banks to publish details of dormant accounts and unclaimed balances on their websites. A next of kin the customer agreed to is a person your team can try when a phone number stops working. See the CBN dormancy guide and Entrustt for banks and fintechs.

Wallet and savings apps usually collect a next-of-kin field at sign-up and never look at it again. An API turns that field into a living record: a refresh prompt every so often, a flag when a user goes quiet, and a way to reach the named person with a staff member reviewing. Lagos fintech teams can start in the sandbox. See where Lagos banks and fintechs should start.
Next of kin API for NGX registrars in Lagos
The SEC puts unclaimed dividends at about ₦270 billion, and held the first town hall of its national campaign in Lagos. Its Director General named missing bank details as the main reason the figure keeps rising. Under the Finance Act 2020 and the Investments and Securities Act 2025, dividends unclaimed for six years are meant to move to the Unclaimed Funds Trust Fund, and shareholders keep ownership. A registrar that holds a consented second contact for each shareholder has one more way to find them first. See unclaimed dividends and NGX registrars and Entrustt for registrars and pensions.
Next of kin API for pension administrators in Lagos
PenCom’s data recapture asks contributors with accounts opened on or before 1 July 2019 to update their records, and a change of next of kin is one of the reasons to do so. PFAs run the exercise. An API helps them notice when a contributor’s details look out of date and prompts the contributor to confirm them through the PFA’s own process. See PenCom data recapture and next of kin.
What to look for in the API
- Consent recorded for each named contact, with the date, and an easy way to change it.
- Refresh prompts, so numbers and emails do not go stale.
- Inactivity events sent to your systems by signed webhook.
- A person reviews anything shared with the contact before it goes out.
- An audit log you can show a regulator.
- Sandbox keys, so your engineers can test first.
Next-of-kin records are personal data, so the Nigeria Data Protection Act 2023 applies. Take advice from counsel on your lawful basis and notices.

Common questions
What is a next of kin API?
An API that stores the person a customer has named, keeps the details current and lets an institution reach that person under rules it sets.
Is this only for banks?
No. Fintechs, registrars handling shareholder records and pension administrators hold the same kind of data, and the same API pattern applies to each.
Does Entrustt move money or release unclaimed dividends?
No. Entrustt handles information only. Payments and changes to the register stay with the bank, registrar or administrator.
How can a Lagos institution try Entrustt?
Book a conversation with Entrustt or ask for sandbox keys, and your engineers can test the API before you decide.
